HVAC Technician - Job Summary
As an HVAC Technician (Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic), you are responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration systems. You will ensure all systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with New Zealand electrical, environmental, and building standards across residential, commercial, and industrial settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Installation & Commissioning: Assemble, install, and commission HVAC systems, including heat pumps, chillers, and ducting.
- Diagnostics & Repair: Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and refrigerant faults using specialized testing instruments like multimeters and leak detectors.
- System Maintenance: Perform preventive maintenance, including filter replacement, coil cleaning, and lubrication of moving parts to prevent breakdowns.
- Refrigerant Management: Handle, recover, and dispose of refrigerants responsibly, ensuring full compliance with environmental regulations.
- Control Systems: Install and calibrate thermostats, pressure sensors, and programmable devices for automated temperature control.
- Documentation: Maintain detailed service records, including commissioning data, pressure readings, and refrigerant logs for compliance.
Qualifications and Skills
- Registration: Must hold and maintain a current Electrical Service Technician (EST) Licence issued by the EWRB of New Zealand.
- Qualification/Experience: A recognized trade qualification in air-conditioning/refrigeration or a minimum of three (3) years of relevant HVAC experience.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of HVAC/R components, hydronic systems, and electrical safety codes.
- Safety Commitment: Dedicated to workplace health and safety, including the correct handling of electrical and refrigerant components.
- Requirements: High attention to detail, physical fitness for demanding environments, and a full drivers license.
